We talk a lot about moving to Value-Based Care. And when we do, most people immediately think of Value-Based Medical Care. But the cost of Pharmaceuticals, especially Oncology products are skyrocketing. So it would seem to make sense that payers start to think about how to bend the curve of Oncology product spend with the same eye toward value that they’re considering medical spend. Avoidable ED visits are often viewed as a bad thing. But as Benjamin Franklin wrote, “The things which hurt, instruct.” Bottom line, we’re not going to stop patients from heading to the ED when they think they’re having an emergency. But as a provider or payer, what we do from there makes all the difference. We can either use the ED visit as an opportunity to improve patient care, or we can hope it doesn’t happen again. And as I’ve said to my team many times, hope is not a business strategy.
