Avoidable ED visits are often viewed as a bad thing. But as Benjamin Franklin wrote, “The things which hurt, instruct.” Bottom line, we’re not going to stop patients from heading to the ED when they think they’re having an emergency. But as a provider or payer, what we do from there makes all the difference. We can either use the ED visit as an opportunity to improve patient care, or we can hope it doesn’t happen again. And as I’ve said to my team many times, hope is not a business strategy.
